Demodex Eye Mites

What Are Eye Mites or Eyelash Mites?

Eye mites also known as Demodex is a
genus of a parasitic mites that live in or near hair
follicles of mammals. There are about 65 different species of Demodex
with only two species known to attack human beings, i.e. the
Demodex
brevis
and Demodex folliculorum both of which
are commonly refers as to hair mites or face mites. However, eye mites or
eyelash mites only refers to D
emodex folliculorum.

The Demodex brevis is normally found on the sebaceous glands while
the Demodex folliculorum (follicle mites) is found on hair follicles. Both these two
species are commonly found on facial areas and thus at times know as face mites especially on areas near your cheeks,
forehead, chin, eyebrows, eyelashes as well as your nose.
However, they
can also be found on other body parts too.

Causes of facial mites or how do you
get eyelash mites

If you think
hygiene could be a main reason why you have mites in eyelashes, you are wrong
since scientists have shown no relationship between personal hygiene and
infestation of these mites. They have only noted that some hosts are much
preferred by face mites than others.
However, there
seems a connection between eye mites
and mascara
 as
women who wear a lot of mascara tend to have a higher prevalence of these mites
on their eyelashes. This is the same case for people who wear a lot of eye
makeup in general.
Furthermore,
people who have oily skins tend to be more vulnerable to mites on
eyelashes than those who do not have much. This could be perhaps due to
the fact that they feed on these oils.
Not washing
your face before you go to bed or sleeping with your
make-up could also be a
cause for the increased levels of face mites. According to Dr. Oz (of The Oprah
Show fame), 50% of Americans have eyelash mites as a result of sleeping in eye
make-up
What are some of the eye mite symptoms?
·
You
will have Demodex mite bite or demodicosis that often results to some skin
disorders, inflammation or an itching skin. You will experience the
inflammation and itching in the morning since these mites crawl out of you
eyelash follicles at night, mate, lay eggs and crawl back into your follicle in
the morning.
·
Rosacea
is another common sign you have lash mites as these mites often cause
inflammatory skin diseases including rosacea.
·
Blepharitis,
an eyelid inflammation condition characterized by crusty, swollen, reddened,
burning and itchy eyelids.
·
Affected
people may suffer from acne vulgaris as these mites often promote acne
vulgaris.
·
Eyelash
falling out
in case there are so many of
them in one single eyelash follicle.
·
Severe
infestation of face mites can lead to eye and skin infection.
It is normal for doctors to ignore the presence of mites
in eyelashes
unless they are able to notice some eye mites’ symptoms.

Human Demodex Mites Under The Microscope

“Know thy enemy, know thy self.”

Okay, that isn't completely fair as mites aren't necessarily the bad guys, which is explained in a previous post here.

But one needs to know the problem before it can be solved. This is often the case with mites, as for the most part they have fallen under the radar, despite a large estimation of the population carrying them.

The life cycle of these mites are incredibly short—so short, in fact, that their bodies are not even equipped with organs for eliminating waste products.

They live on oils and nutrients from our skin, mate, lay eggs, and then die within two weeks of being hatched. Often, both humans and their eight-legged friends can live peacefully with each other; however, when their numbers grow too high and an infestation begins, many unpleasant side effects may be experienced by the host.

It seems that in older people, those with suppressed immune systems (caused by stress or illness), or possibly those taking antibiotics or with compromised skin fauna, can sometimes have the mite population dramatically increase and get out of control.

What do Demodex mites look like?

Well, because they are invisible to the eye, unless aided by a microscope many people are curious what is actually going on with hair mites and how they look.

The adult ‪#‎Demodex‬ hair ‪#‎mites‬ usually are around 0.3 mm in length. They have semi-transparent elongated bodies with 8 short segmented legs. Hair mites have pin-like mouth-parts for eating skin cells, hormones and oils.

They crawl! They move by crawling about in darkness. Many people who have mites complain of itching or a ‘crawling’ feeling they get on the skin and this is one explanation of it.

UNGEX highly recommends use of this device to help speed up the elimination process.

HFI can be used on face, scalp, forehead and skin.

1. Clean and sterilise the HFI before and after use. (e.g. sterilise with PDT).
2. Switch on and apply the appropriate combs based on your needs.
3. Brush HFI in a massaging motion smoothly over a clean dry scalp or skin concentrating on areas with hair loss or thinning.
4. Adjust the intensity of the frequency to your personal preferences (low, medium or high, depending on your tolerance for the HFI).
5. Do NOT use a stabbing motion to begin massage and do NOT leave HFI in one specific area of the scalp for more than 10 seconds.
6. Adjust the intensity to 0 before you turn off the HFI and remove attachment.
7. Remember to test it on your hand or arm before using on your skin/scalp

MORE ABOUT MITES

What are Demodex mites?

Demodex mites are microscopic parasites that feed off the oils, hormones, and fluids that are present around human hair follicles

Where can Demodex mites be found?

Mites can be found in the hair follicles and sebaceous glands on humans. They become most active at night, in the dark.

What do Demodex mites look like?

They are invisible to the eye unless aided by a microscope. The adult Demodex mite is around 0.3 mm in length. They have semi-transparent elongated bodies with 8 short segmented legs. At night they can walk on the skin at a speed of 8 to 16 cm an hour.

Are Demodex mites the same as head lice?
No, mites are different to head lice. Mites are parasites that live inside hair follicles and feed off of the oils they produce. Lice are larger, and can be seen by the naked eye. They live on top of the human scalp, and feed exclusively on blood.

How to know if I have Demodex mites?

Mites are very common in humans of all ages. Those affected usually have tell-tale symptoms such as: loss of hair and hair thinning, aging skin, enlarged pores, facial redness and discoloration, acne and itching.

ABOUT SYMPTOMS

I lose hair in the shower when I brush, is this normal?

It can be normal if it’s just a limited number, however hair is weaker when wet, so brushing wet hair can cause breakage and cause your hair to weaken, which could contribute to hair loss.

Can dandruff be a sign of mites?

Are mites causing my rosacea?

My eyes are always inflamed and sticky around the lashes. Could this mean I have mites in my eyelashes?

Is there a way that a child can have a mite infestation if they have a weakened immune system?

Demodex mites living in the hair follicles leave waste and their decomposing bodies behind. This can cause a build-up of bacteria and germs and then lead to dandruff. Mites will come out of the hair follicles only to walk and mate on top of the scalp, this causes itching when their tiny claws scuff the surface of the scalp, and excessive scratching can contribute to dandruff as well.

It’s possible. Mites can be linked to rosacea in some people. People affected with mite-related rosacea will often have weakened immune systems either from autoimmune deficiencies or something in their lifestyle which could be causing the mites to overpopulate in the skin.

Yes it’s possible, as a mite infestation in the eyelash follicles can lead to blepharitis. Blepharitis is a condition that causes inflammation of the eyelids, eye discharge, a dry gritty sensation in the eyes and general itching/discomfort. If you are experiencing more than two of these symptoms it is very possible to have an eyelash mite infestation.

Yes, although children usually do not get Demodex mite infestations, there have been cases recorded of children with mites and infections caused by mites. In recorded cases of children with mites, they have also had diseases or conditions affecting the immune system.
