Hair care products, along with other
cosmetic and personal care products we use every day, contain thousands of
ingredients. Most of which aren’t harmful, but others have been linked to
health issues from skin and eye irritation to cancers.
Below are some of the chemicals set as
the appropriate standard for beauty, cosmetic and personal care products which
can be harmful to your health. Watch out for these chemicals when buying your foundation,
shampoo and toothpastes so you don’t put yourself at further risk.
Parabens are a range of effective and
widely used preservatives in cosmetic and pharmaceutical products. They can be
found in shampoos, standard moisturisers, shaving gels, personal lubricants,
spray tanning solution, makeup, and even toothpaste! However studies have found
high concentrations of parabens in human breast tumours and parabens are able
to interfere with estrogen in the body, which can influence the development of
breast cancer. Studies are still being performed, but its best to stay away to
be safe.
Sodium laureth sulfate (SLS), or sodium
lauryl ether sulfate (SLES), is an anionic detergent and surfactant found in
many personal care products (soaps, shampoos, toothpaste etc.). It’s cheap to
make and a very effective foaming agent.
Unfortunately, they’re also dangerous,
highly irritating chemicals. Far from providing healthy hair and skin as they
claim, products containing these chemicals can lead to direct damage to the
hair follicle, skin damage, permanent eye damage and even liver toxicity.
Aside from studies proving Cocamide DEA
has a high irritation potential. The International Agency for Research on
Cancer (IARC) lists coconut oil diethanolamine condensate (cocamide DEA) as
possibly carcinogenic to humans and was added to the list of chemicals known to
cause cancer in 2012 in California, US.
Studies have increasingly linked
triclosan to a range of adverse health and environmental effects, from skin
irritation, endocrine disruption (disruptions can cause cancerous tumours),
bacterial and compounded antibiotic resistance. In fact, with every new study
being done the dangers are becoming more and more prominent with states in the
US already banning the use of the chemical in their personal care products.
Make sure when choosing your next foundation,
conditioner, body wash, toothpaste and other personal care products to check
the label to avoid danger!
