Eye mites also known as Demodex is a genus of a parasitic mites that live in or near hair follicles of mammals. There are about 65 different species of Demodex with only two species known to attack human beings, i.e. the Demodex brevis and Demodex folliculorum both of which are commonly refers as to hair mites or face mites. However, eye mites or eyelash mites only refers to Demodex folliculorum.
The Demodex brevis is normally found on the sebaceous glands while the Demodex folliculorum (follicle mites) is found on hair follicles. Both these two species are commonly found on facial areas and thus at times know as face mites especially on areas near your cheeks, forehead, chin, eyebrows, eyelashes as well as your nose. However, they can also be found on other body parts too.
Causes of facial mites or how do you get eyelash mites, If you think hygiene could be a main reason why you have mites in eyelashes, you are wrong since scientists have shown no relationship between personal hygiene and infestation of these mites. They have only noted that some hosts are much preferred by face mites than others.
However, there seems a connection between eye mites and mascara as women who wear a lot of mascara tend to have a higher prevalence of these mites on their eyelashes. This is the same case for people who wear a lot of eye make-up in general.
Furthermore, people who have oily skins tend to be more vulnerable to mites on eyelashes than those who do not have much. This could be perhaps due to the fact that they feed on these oils.
Not washing your face before you go to bed or sleeping with your make up could also be a cause for the increased levels of face mites. According to Dr. Oz (of The Oprah Show fame), 50% of Americans have eyelash mites as a result of sleeping in eye make-up
What are some of the eye mite symptoms?
• You will have Demodex mite bite or demodicosis that often results to some skin disorders, inflammation or an itching skin. You will experience the inflammation and itching in the morning since these mites crawl out of you eyelash follicles at night, mate, lay eggs and crawl back into your follicle in the morning.
• Rosacea is another common sign you have lash mites as these mites often cause inflammatory skin diseases including rosacea.
• Blepharitis, an eyelid inflammation condition characterized by crusty, swollen, reddened, burning and itchy eyelids.
• Affected people may suffer from acne vulgaris as these mites often promote acne vulgaris.
• Eyelash falling out in case there are so many of them in one single eyelash follicle.
• Severe infestation of face mites can lead to eye and skin infection.
It is normal for doctors to ignore the presence of mites in eyelashes unless they are able to notice some eye mites’ symptoms.

About Demodex mites:
Two species of Demodex mites living on humans:
1. Demodex folliculorum:
• Live in oil gland and hair follicles
• male:0.219mm, female:0.294mm
2. Demodex brevis:
• Live in the sebaceous glands
• male:0.165mm , female:0.208mm
Symptoms- what, why?
1- Hair loss and thinning
• Mites feed off of sebum.
• Follicles become undernourished causing hair to fall out
• If untreated population increases
2- Aging skin, enlarged pores, acne
• Multiple mites share one follicle, causes skin to stretch
• Mites eat collagen and elastic from skin
• Skin loses elasticity
• Results in wrinkles and other signs of aging
• Deceased mites and their faces decompose inside follicles
• Causing build ups and blockages (pimples/ blackheads)
• Resulting in pimples and blackheads
3- Rosacea and facial discoloration
• Mites have been shown to carry the bacteria ‘bacterium Bacillus oleronius’ which according to recent research could be a contributing factor.
• Increased mite density in skin may trigger inflammatory responses, block hair follicles or help transmit other bacteria in the skin, leading to signs and symptoms of rosacea.
4- Itching, tough skin and general discomfort.
• Demodex walks with its claws scuffing the skin, causing itching and toughened skin.
The main difference between the shampoos is that IS is used for light oil control and PS is used for heavier oil control on the scalp, face and body.
Both can help in reducing the density of Demodex hair and face mites and used nightly can aid in prevention. Everyone’s body is different, and different skin types have different needs.
A general guideline for how often you use shampoos at night is dependent on your skin type: Dry Skin: Use at least once a week Normal Skin: 3-4 times a week Oily Skin: Maybe every night, it is okay to use more PS than IS.
IMPORTANT NOTE: You do not need to wash every night with the shampoos if you do not have oily skin. However, it is very important that you use the HFI, Treatment Hair Tonic (THT) and the Pro D’modex Treatment (PDT) every night.
How To Use:
1. Only wash with shampoos at night. This optimises the elimination of mites.
2. The two shampoos can be used on alternating nights.
3. Shampoos can also be used on the face and body, especially PS for oily skin.
4. Wash with warm water when using shampoos, then rinse head and body with cool water
Avoid use of hair conditioners and moisturisers, as you do not want to feed the mites.
The HFI dramatically speeds up the process, and Ungex highly recommends purchase of this device to help speed up the elimination process.
How to Use:
1. Clean and sterilise the HFI before use. (Sterilise with PDT).
2. Switch on and apply the small ball tipped attachment (comb attachment can be used for those with extreme hair loss).
3. Brush HFI in a massaging motion over a clean dry scalp, concentrating on areas with hair loss or thinning.
4. Adjust the intensity of the frequency to your personal preferences (low, medium or high, depending on your tolerance for the HFI).
5. Do NOT use a stabbing motion to begin massage and do NOT leave HFI in one specific area of the scalp for more than 10 seconds.
6. Adjust the intensity to 0 before you turn off the HFI and remove attachment.
7. Sterilise with PDT after use
Note: We recommend that no other products should be used on the scalp or hair for the duration of your care plan with UNGEX. However, if this is unavoidable we strongly suggest that other products be used in the morning and avoid contact with the actual scalp (as this will provide sustenance for mites) as much as possible.
If skin becomes dry, try using organic coconut oil to introduce some moisture without feeding your mites!

Everything You Ever Wanted To Know About Demodex Mites!
Around 65 species of Demodex are known. Two species living on humans have been identified: Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis, both frequently referred to as hair mites, face mites, skin mites, body mites, eyelash mites, eyebrow mites, ear mites, human mites or hair follicle mites.
Demodex mites are parasites that live in hair follicles. Studies show the Demodex hair mites to be associated with numerous types of skin complications, for example the mites have been identified as a leading contributor to hair loss, aging skin, rough skin, wide pores, red nose, pimples, acne, rosacea, freckles, spots, fine wrinkles, atopic dermatitis, itching, dermatosis, rash, discoloration on the face and other skin conditions.
While follicle mites may cause certain problems, it also is possible specific skin conditions become a breeding ground for Demodex mites. Besides, it's a major problem for dogs too known as Demodex canis. If you have high levels of hormones, you're going to have high levels of Demodex mite reproduction because these invertebrate insects obtain their steroids from the host.
Recent research suggests that most people may have Demodex mites, usually A-symptomatic in healthy people, but when there’s a high density of mites residing within the human host - usually due to stress or illness (autoimmune deficiencies/ diseases) the human suffers negative effects with skin problems and hair loss. Unfortunately this is widely unknown to the public.
UNGEX is a company that have received several business certificates and awards, including the 2012 "Best Invention Award" for the invention of ‘Ungex Hair Mites Solution’ to provide a natural/ herbal-based care plan for this. Ungex products – unique shampoos, treatment hair tonics and Pro-Demodex treatment spray - work in conjunction to effectively help eliminate all types of human mites. Be part of the innovation in order to help ensure a safe, effective way of helping those who suffer from Demodex mites.
